Description:
Tropical Storm Sara struck northern Honduras with unexpected force, bringing over 400mm of rain, severe flooding, and widespread destruction. More than 110,000 people were affected, 2,600 displaced, and at least one person killed. The storm washed out eight bridges, damaged 16 more, and cut off evacuation routes, exposing the country’s vulnerability to extreme weather.
Initially expected to pass offshore, Sara’s slow movement over warm waters intensified its impact. Rescue efforts were hampered by mistrust in rural communities, where some residents refused to evacuate. Experts warn that Honduras remains highly exposed to climate disasters due to poor urban planning and a lack of disaster preparedness, echoing the devastation of Hurricanes Eta and Iota in 2020.
